Georgia Phillips

Grief: Extended, 2021

projection of 30 second looped animation onto mirror.

Georgia’s Degree Show project concerns her recently deceased pet, Henrietta. Georgia and her family cared for her day and night; the loss of their unconditionally loved pet of 15 years left them distraught. Georgia pursued a cathartic compulsion, drawing Henrietta in an approachable and friendly aesthetic, inspired by Studio Ghibli's’ animation artist Hayao Miyazaki. The façade hides a raw and dark story of grief and emotional distress. Georgia was contextually influenced by Pierre Huyghe’s ‘Human Mask’ piece and John Berger’s ‘Why We Look at Animals’ text.

Georgia Phillips is an artist who works with a multitude of mediums. The concepts behind her University projects focus on political and social issues, exploring the taboo. Such theories as ‘Participation’ by Claire Bishop inspire her. Georgia finds art produced with this theory endearing. Such art speaks to a niche audience and a special connection between the artist and consumer forms.
