Benjamin Wright

The Misapprehension of the Mind, 2021

Video installation

Benjamin Wright's practice is a cathartic expression of personal struggles, predominantly mental illness, eating disorders, and his position within the LGBTQ+ community.

He refuses to disregard provocative topics, directly addressing those considered 'taboo' such as male femininity and mental disorders.

He aims to shed light upon areas within society that have been overlooked or discriminated against. By critiquing these areas, he hopes to use his platform to bring awareness and provide a voice for those who may feel the same way.

Wright's current project, The Misapprehension of the Mind, investigates an aspect of Alzheimer's disease - the idea of recognition and interpretation of time and objects. To achieve this, Wright has incorporated Derrida's theory on deconstruction into the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. This test can be used to assess a patient's cognitive abilities, including time, memory, and the ability to distinguish objects. Wright hopes this installation. piece will bring further awareness to the disease.
