Speculative Sculptural Spaces, 2021

Sculpture series including mesh, wire, pigeon spikes, concrete and bricks

‘Speculative Sculptural Spaces’ is a series of works created by Bethany for the Sanctum Degree Show. These works are inspired by the speculation and intersection between art, design, and architecture within speculative sculptures.

The sculptures speculate on how we view our current and future spaces, where there may be no clear, intentional design for primary use. This is inspired by self-awareness with how we use spaces and our environment that is noticeable due to social distancing during the pandemic and the importance of sustainability in proposed architectural designs for remodelling or renovating environments.

Bethany Tompkins is a speculative artist inspired by creating quiet reflection spaces regarding our perception of ourselves and our environment. The created works may not represent a clear answer but instead display the in-between, proposing a subject matter but leaving it open-ended for audience interpretation and discussion.
